In March of 2014, I received a message from SjanineSteyn, owner/chair at Big Wave Records, an independent netlabel in South Africa. She was interested in having Isotherme as part of a compilation album she was putting together for her label, and asked if I could compose a track for it. The collection was to be titled SEHNSUCHT (a German term for which there really is no English equivalent. It’s meant to describe a sense of longing never fulfilled). I was thrilled to have been asked and to this day, I’m very thankful to Sjanine for being an early supporter of my music—and a quite supporter she still is. Please consider checking out Sehnsucht on bandcamp.com via the link above. Also, Sjanine’s own music recorded under her artist name Alchesound is not to be missed (bigwaverecs.wixsite.com/big-wave-records/alchesound).
I hear my love of Russian composers in “Winter is Gone, and You”, particularly Sergei Prokofiev. I wanted to portray my own version of the musical winter I loved in Prokofiev’s Lt. Kije Suite and Alexander Nevsky Cantata. Some sections of this piece succeed in this aim, particularly the middle section, where the woodwind clusters bounce off of the Mellotron lines. A friend of mine (who is much better versed in classical music than I am) once told me that this piece reminds him of something more in the French classical tradition than the Russian one. That’s likely correct! But to me, I think the feel was what I was going for. That longing, empty feeling, exacerbated by the cold, but also beautiful like glistening snow.

This EP was created using guitar, delay pedals and a looper pedal. It has an excellent experimental feel with great use of delay, layered sounds and feedback and Roofhare gets a huge range of sounds from the guitar. I really like the development of rhythmic sounds and interplay between the different delay effects which gives an ambience with a darker edge and great tension at times. Andrulian
