about

Written and Recorded in July 2014.
“To Cecilia” was composed and recorded as a one-take improvised piece of music for Geeky Disco Records and released on their compilation album I Improvised 3, which is now out of circulation. I used a synthesizer by Native Instruments called Reaktor and recorded my manipulation of a loop while reciting the words. The text is the story of a spiritual phenomenon I experienced in 1996 at St. Cecilia’s Church, Boston, MA, and is told in epistolary form. St. Cecilia is the Catholic patron saint of musicians, and the church sits in Boston’s Back Bay, right behind Berklee College of Music, my alma mater. Apologies to Paul Simon for the last line.

lyrics

Cecilia,
When I called the room was empty.
Empty except for you- you’re always there.
The echo of my footsteps was the only proof that we were alone,
Each tap bouncing from your sides, announcing my approach.
I came to you for the aid only you could provide,
And you embraced me with arms so knowing, so expectant.
I could tell you were counting the seconds 'til my need overtook my pride.
As you knew it would.

My apology was sincere, and it took everything I had
To sit in your presence and accept my penance.
And you knew I threw my life at you, and I expected you to throw it back at me;
Like a mockingbird’s revenge, a friar’s last laugh.
But you didn’t.
You sensed my hopelessness, and responded with a song of love and compassion.
I extended my hand with caution, as a trial, unsure how you would react.
Your palm enveloped my entire body.
And still, each cell resonates, each touch still vibrates like a biblical tremor.

Cecilia, you’re shaking my heart.
