about

Written and recorded in January 2013, and then re-arranged, and re-written and re-recorded multiple times since.

I’ve suffered from migraine headaches ever since I was a kid. Although the headaches have lessened in frequency as I’ve grown older, every now and then I still develop a real whopper. My strategy to fight a migraine is to take a few ibuprofen pills and sleep it off in a cool, dark place. This sleep, however, is not restful. Once I drift off, I usually enter a state of half slumber where I’m not engaged with my surroundings, but my brain is still vividly active and my senses are turned inward and very much aware. “The sound” starts as soft, high-pitched, ringing impulse. My thoughts fade in and out, and bounce through the growing impulse--not to quell it, but rather, to join it. I suppose it’s a bit like catching a wave when surfing, and how I find myself riding that growing wave, knowing what lies ahead. As the impulse gets louder, it splinters into a fuzz—a white noise like the foamy top of a turbulent ocean. At this point, I realize that I am about to be consumed by the sound, and the only way to stop it is to force myself awake. I kick my legs and flail my arms, trying to escape to full consciousness. Maybe my fight is a reaction to the feeling that I’m dying a little, or that I’ll never wake up. This mounting noise is likely the ibuprofen shaking hands with my brain electricity, but to me, in those moments, it’s the sound of shutting down.
