Honestly, I’ve never visited Galashiels, Scotland, let alone been lost in it. Galashiels is an old textile town not far from the east coast of Scotland, and is part of a list I keep in my head of European locales that have cool sounding names (Winterthur Switzerland, Copenhagen Denmark and Nottingham UK also make this list). I chose Galashiels from this list because it fitted nicely with the bagpipe idea I was playing around with.
The piece is just a bunch of rhythmic and sound atmospherics, along withthat synthesized bagpipe melody. I composed this as a respite during the making of the Nail album in late 2014. I never planned on using it for Nail, but at the time, I was in need of a break from mixing the Nail tracks and just wanted to sit down in my studio and experiment with sounds for a while. Sometimes interesting ideas shake loose using an approach like this. It’s almost like a composer’s Research and Development time: always fun, always creative, but rarely too serious and usually without a specific direction.
Maybe one day I’ll make it to Galashiels—and likely, it will sound nothing like the music in this piece. Perhaps I can find a synthesized alphorn for Winterthur next.

This EP was created using guitar, delay pedals and a looper pedal. It has an excellent experimental feel with great use of delay, layered sounds and feedback and Roofhare gets a huge range of sounds from the guitar. I really like the development of rhythmic sounds and interplay between the different delay effects which gives an ambience with a darker edge and great tension at times. Andrulian
