about

Written and recorded in September 2012.

I recorded this entire piece using the on-board preset sounds on my Korg M50 (which I modified a bit). While there is better software for sampled orchestral sounds available, I didn’t think these were too bad, especially in light of the limited equipment choices I had in my studio over 4 years ago. The title “Dust Mistletoe” is meant to evoke images of neglect and conflict. I’m thinking of a holiday mistletoe hanging in the doorway of a home, forgotten and collecting dust; its leaves missing people embracing and sharing a kiss beneath. Although the melodies can be heard as pretty, maybe, the piece hits me with a bittersweet sadness--- a sentimental decay, in fact, and suitably, as I wrote the song on the first day of autumn 2012.

Musically, Dust Mistletoe was inspired by the jazz composer Carla Bley (of whom I’m a huge fan), particularly her composition "Utviklingssang". My aim was to compose a piece with a similar feel and tempo to "Utviklingssang" but also to introduce simple melodies every few bars that would interweave with the ones that came before. I wrote it all on guitar, originally.
