“Cascade” was inspired by some of the minimalist artists I was listening to at the time. Of course, Brian Eno wrote and recorded many beautiful pieces in his Ambient series of the late-70s/early-80s, and some of this tradition is carried into the work of modern composers Tim Hecker and Taylor Deupree, a couple of my contemporary favorites.
My aim with “Cascade” was to write multiple simple melodies whose notes were nearly identical, but would present in a slightly offset manner when playing at the same time. This piece also was an early journey of mine into orchestral or chamber instruments like bassoon, clarinet, oboe and classical percussion. Albeit generated from a synthesizer, these instruments inspired me to arrange variations on the main melodies and create counterpoints to the piece’s theme.
The title comes from my imagining the notes in the melodies dripping downward like water in some parts, but also crashing like a torrent in the crescendos.
This EP was created using guitar, delay pedals and a looper pedal. It has an excellent experimental feel with great use of delay, layered sounds and feedback and Roofhare gets a huge range of sounds from the guitar. I really like the development of rhythmic sounds and interplay between the different delay effects which gives an ambience with a darker edge and great tension at times. Andrulian
