I had no idea where I was going while I was composing this, but I knew I wanted to write an epic length electro-prog journey over sonic mountains and clattering, pitching skies. I had the main melody for the song, which was used four different times in various tonal centers and with different instruments each time (in order of appearance: orchestral combo, then guitar, then Mellotron, and finally drone/ambient pads). I also had a few chord changes I liked, but I didn’t know where they would turn up in the arrangement of the piece. By the time I had my first listen of the entire song, I really felt it was by some divine assistance that I had managed to reach the end. I barely remember writing it along the way. It just appeared. My friend Martin has noted that we are “secretaries of music”. We make it tangible, but it really comes from somewhere unknown and manifests itself through our fingers and voices.
I was so excited with this song, that I just knew it would get me noticed. I sent an early mix of it to one of my favorite electronic record labels (N5MD in Oakland, CA). I do know that they listened to some of it, but I never heard from them in return. I guess they weren’t interested.
Anyway, aside from the "blackbird" section towards the end, this piece has very little to do with the English children’s song. It is made up of 6 sections and the pie opens in the 5th one. Listen for the wings fluttering and the Mellotron “birds” singing the main theme.

This EP was created using guitar, delay pedals and a looper pedal. It has an excellent experimental feel with great use of delay, layered sounds and feedback and Roofhare gets a huge range of sounds from the guitar. I really like the development of rhythmic sounds and interplay between the different delay effects which gives an ambience with a darker edge and great tension at times. Andrulian
